Improved Fire Protection Classification
Oct 14, 2026ISO Classification Update for Homeowners
As of October 1, the Idaho Surveying and Rating Bureau (ISRB) has adopted Garden Valley Fire Protection District’s improved fire protection classification from an ISO Class 5 to an ISO Class 4. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their insurance agent or carrier directly and ask them to verify that the updated ISO/ISRB classification has been applied to their policy. While insurance companies update records on their own schedules, providing your property address and requesting a review by your insurance carrier will help ensure you receive any applicable rating adjustments or discounts available under your carrier’s guidelines.
Understanding Fire Protection Classifications
Fire protection classifications are determined by the Idaho Surveying and Rating Bureau (ISRB) based on several factors, including fire department resources, staffing, training, apparatus, water supply, communications systems, and response capabilities. Classifications can vary throughout the Garden Valley Fire Protection District depending on the property’s proximity to a fire station and available water sources. While many areas of the district now benefit from the improved Class 4 rating, individual property classifications may vary based on location-specific factors.
Rural Water Shuttle Credit Initiative
The Garden Valley Fire Protection District remains committed to improving fire protection classifications for residents in the more rural areas of our district through the Water Shuttle Recognition Program. This program evaluates a fire department’s ability to deliver water to locations without a pressurized hydrant system and may provide additional credit toward a property’s fire protection classification. Achieving these credits is a detailed, long-term process requiring equipment, training, documentation, testing, and evaluation. While there is no guarantee of the outcome, the district remains focused on securing these shuttle credits targeting a formal evaluation in 2027. If successful, eligible properties in rural areas may benefit from improved fire protection classifications, which could positively impact insurance ratings depending on individual insurance carrier guidelines.
